If you take a moment to gaze up at the sky on a clear day, you’ll notice that it appears a beautiful, vibrant blue. But have you ever wondered why the sky looks this way? It’s actually a fascinating phenomenon that has to do with the way sunlight interacts with the gases in our atmosphere.
Rayleigh Scattering
The primary reason the sky appears blue is a process known as Rayleigh scattering. This process is named after the 19th-century British physicist Lord Rayleigh, who first explained the physics behind it.
As sunlight travels through the atmosphere, the shorter wavelengths of the visible light spectrum (the blues and violets) are scattered more easily by the tiny molecules of gas that make up our air. This scattering causes the blue light to be reflected in all directions, which our eyes perceive as the blue colour of the sky.
The longer wavelengths of the spectrum, such as the reds and oranges, are not scattered as much. This is why sunrises and sunsets often appear reddish – the sunlight has to pass through more of the atmosphere, allowing more of the red light to reach our eyes.
The Composition of the Atmosphere
The gases that make up our atmosphere also contribute to the sky’s blue hue. Nitrogen and oxygen make up around 99% of the air, and these molecules are just the right size to optimally scatter the shorter blue wavelengths.
If our atmosphere was composed of different gases, the sky might appear a different colour. For example, the planet Mars has an atmosphere made up primarily of carbon dioxide, which results in its distinctive reddish-orange sky.
Other Factors
While Rayleigh scattering is the primary driver, there are a few other factors that can influence the appearance of the sky:
Cloud cover – Thick cloud cover can mask the blue of the sky, causing it to appear more grey or white.
Pollution – Particulates and other pollutants in the air can also affect how light is scattered, potentially muting the blue colour. This is as Mie scattering
Time of day – As mentioned earlier, the sky often appears reddish at sunrise and sunset when the sunlight has to pass through more atmosphere. The Eye – The human eye is not as sensitive to violet as it is to blue, so although Rayleigh Scatter should make the sky violet we can’t actually see the violet colour very well and only really see the blue part.
